My Mom would like to revamp her porch swing and she’s been bugging me about helping her find some outdoor pillows. She wants the swing to to look more inviting with a lot of pillows and a nice long cushion. Here’s the blank slate she’s working with right now.
This swing came with Bungalow 404 and my Mom commandeered it. It is a lovely FREE wicker swing.
My Mom already has two solid brown Sunbrella pillows and the swing. So she’s adding more throw pillows, a bench cushion and some thick industrial hemp rope to suspend the swing instead of the chain.
She really wants to buy off the shelf so thats why we went with the aqua thistle pillow for now. The thistle pillow shares the green with the ceramic pots framing the entryway.
I’d recommend that she find a brown fabric that matches her existing pillows and have a long lumbar pillow made to anchor the back. She can add other accent pillows over time. As much as I would like to pile the swing high with lots of worn linen and batik pillows, I have to be realistic and consider durability and exposure to the elements. In North Carolina even under a covered porch, this swing will experience more than one drenching in a driving thunderstorm. We had to go with easy care and durability.

You’ve found a great Porch Swing and you know exactly where you want to put it, and it’s not on the Porch. If you’re a Do-it-Yourselfer, no problem. All you have to do now is build a Porch Swing support on your chosen spot and hang the swing. But what if you don’t have the first idea how to build a Porch Swing support or couldn’t build one if you did. Then you’ll need to hire a Porch Swing contractor.
Finding a contractor to build a Porch Swing support and install your Porch Swing is not as easy at it appears. It’s not as if you can go to the yellow pages and look up “Porch Swing contractors”. Instead, you’ll have to find a carpenter or general handiman who works by the hour and who is willing and able to do the job.
Finding a carpenter can be easy enough. But how do you find one who has the required knowledge and experience? The yellow pages is a good place to start. Look for carpenters who specialize in small jobs. Narrow down your list to approximately five.

We have a very small back yard but when we moved in the grass was beautiful, thick and green. Now, thanks to our two adorable dogs, a 3 year old and a swing set, it has several areas of dead patches and is thin and just not beautiful anymore. This is a rental and we’ll be moving in December. Is there anything I can do between now and then to get it back to its green, thick, beautiful state? It’s only about 30′ long and 15′ wide.

The month of March ended earlier in the week so now gardeners and home owners have basically the whole month of April to really get into the swing of gardening and dressing up the landscape.
Although more and more persons have chosen to embrace some phase of gardening, there are still many who prefer to have someone else take care of needed gardening chores.
Even if you hire another person to do your gardening work, it may still be in your best interest to have some knowledge about what needs to be done and how to best accomplish these tasks. So let’s take a peek at what just might be on April’s gardening agenda.
Landscape considerations
Because of our colder than usual winter season, plants like azaleas are blooming a bit later than they typically do. But we’ll be seeing their beauty before the month is over. When they have finished their color parade, it’s time to fertilize.
Remember, these plants prefer acid soil conditions for their best performance, so keep the soil on the acid side by using azalea/camellia fertilizers and follow label instructions for correct applications. While you are at it, share a bit of this acid-type fertilizer with your camellias and gardenias too. Many of our landscapes feature the large-growing Indian-type azaleas. If you have mature specimens and they need to be reduced in size, plan to do any necessary pruning within six weeks after the last bloom falls to the ground. It’s generally considered best not to remove more than one third of the canopy at any one time.
Petunias are very popular bedding plants in our area and many homes still have some blooming. If you are growing this species of bedding plants, extend their period of beauty by pinching off the tips of the branches frequently.
Since the newer varieties are a bit more tolerant of heat, you should be able to keep them going for several more weeks and pinching increases both compactness and induces better flowering.
I recently (last weekend to be exact) visited some local nurseries and garden centers and noted that summer annual bedding plants are already available in quantity.
April is prime time for gardening
