Australia’s great Ocean Road and Highway 1 through big Sur are separated by two very different hemispheres. but as I drove those scenic coastal routes, each revealed natural treasures reminiscent of the other.

Each also offered sights and sounds that were distinctly its own. Towering cliffs, dense forests and abundant marine and land animals brought my “road warrior” spirit to life like no other drives.

Australia’s great Ocean Road

Natural Wonders: the twelve Apostles truly moved me. There’s no stretch of coast quite like it.

Almost paralyzed by its power and beauty, I forgot to take pictures, and then the storm clouds dumped their load. ten minutes later, the sun broke through, and I clicked frantically to beat the next shower.

The twelve Apostles (now eight due to natural erosion) are the result of the ocean eroding the soft limestone to form caves in the cliffs, which then became arches, which in turn collapsed, leaving jagged pinnacles up to 120 feet high.

A few miles down the road, I glimpsed a sign that read “Gibson Steps.” one thought immediately came to mind: This is my chance to touch the Southern Ocean. I walked the expansive beach and let the warm, azure water caress my fingers.

Several more miles later, I entered the Otway Forest and set out on foot again to explore a stunning patch of rain forest called Maits Rest. the sun’s rays struggled to penetrate a canopy of thick ferns and myrtle beeches. Sounds I’ve never heard before pierced the humid air as I walked the slippery pathway. it seemed the Jurassic period forgot to make an exit. the Otway Forest stretches 37 miles and harbors an array of plants, trees, wildlife and waterfalls.

Wildlife: no animal exemplifies Australian wildlife like the cuddly koala. Not wanting to leave Australia without seeing a wild koala, I began my search in the Otway Forest.

I headed south on Cape Otway Road for a few miles. Suddenly, I heard a deep, resonating bellow — the signature sound of a male koala announcing his territory.

I looked to my left and saw the hefty boy clinging to a thin branch. and then I noticed another, and another, and then a mother and her baby began moving from one branch to the next. the small ball of gray fluff temporarily ventured off on his own to play. Several minutes later, mother and joey found a fork in a tree and settled in for a nap. it was the picture of contentment.

During my time in the Otway Forest and along the coast, I encountered large groups of koalas, sulfer-crested cockatoos, black cockatoos, crimson rosellas and red kangaroos. welcome to Australia!

Driving Logistics: the great Ocean Road, in the state of Victoria, begins its 170-mile run in the town of Torquay and ends in Warrnambool. Dedicate at least three days for this adventurous journey.

California Highway 1 through big Sur

Natural Wonders: big Sur never fails to dazzle me, no matter how many times I make the drive. During a recent trip along this beloved stretch of coast, I discovered spectacular scenery I didn’t know existed.

I stopped at the Rocky Point Restaurant to witness the 180-degree view. Noticing a trail that began from the parking lot, I donned a backpack and set off. the trail snaked across a bluff and terminated at some rugged rocks. a short scramble over the rocks revealed the quintessential big Sur scene. the warm, golden sun beautifully lit the frothy surf and dark rocks. the next day found me at McWay Falls, a spot I had visited before, but had never bothered to walk 50 yards to the opposite end of the trail. There, I witnessed a scene so exquisite that the Caribbean and Hawaiian tourism boards wished I hadn’t. Five-story cliffs drop straight down to meet the turquoise Pacific. I wanted to stroll the sliver of golden sand down below, but it’s not allowed in this part of Julia Pfeifer Burns State Park.

I continued driving and was teased by alluring beaches that were just out of reach. Cattle roamed the green hills and munched on lush grass. With pristine beaches, forests, and amazing wildlife, big Sur is one of the world’s finest coasts.

Wildlife: I’ve only observed sea otters from afar, on land. now it was time to take to the water and get up close and personal with the otters of Elkhorn Slough, California’s second largest tract of salt water marsh, in the center of the Monterey Bay coast.

I enlisted the help of a guide with Kayak Connection so I could concentrate on taking pictures. Immediately we were being ogled by a raft of 20 otters. one curious fellow approached to almost an arm’s length away. he rolled over and dove under water and then surfaced on the other side of the kayak. he watched us intently, and then engaged in his playful antics again. so cute!

Being so close to Pacific Grove, I had to witness the annual monarch butterfly migration. Fall and winter bring thousands of these delicate creatures to this picturesque coastal town. When a cluster of monarchs takes to the air, it’s an overload of yellow, orange and black.

Driving Logistics: from the Monterey Peninsula, the big Sur coast stretches south for 90 miles to just north of San Simeon on Highway 1. at least two days is needed to explore its natural splendor.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Junior Carlin Salmon had a season-high 16 kills and senior Megan Thornberry turned in a season-high 29 digs to help the Wake Forest volleyball team win a hard-fought contest over Virginia Sunday afternoon at Memorial Gymnasium.

The Demon Deacons (12-7, 5-4 ACC) defeated the Cavaliers (9-10, 3-6 ACC) 20-25, 25-23, 25-22, 25-23.

Salmon’s 16 kills led all Demon Deacons, while she also led the team with a season-high seven total blocks. Thornberry was just three digs away from tying a career-high with her 29 digs. Virginia’s Simone Asque led all players with 28 kills, while AJ Cushman had a match-high 31 digs for the Cavs.

Freshman Kylie Hargreaves came off the bench in the middle of the second set and turned in a career performance. Hargreaves had career-highs of 10 kills, a .348 hitting percentage, three aces and three total blocks.

Junior defensive specialist Cambrey Oehler also provided some unexpected offense with a season-high four kills out of the back row, while also recording 11 digs.

Senior setter Kelsey Jones had her fourth double-double of the season with a season-high 53 assists and 14 digs, while sophomore Andrea Beck provided much offense out of the middle with 13 kills. Senior right side hitter Lauren McIntyre was error free on the match with five kills and also turned in three crucial blocks.

Neither team took more than a one-point lead in Set 1, and the score was tied at 9-9 before Asque got a kill for Virginia and went back to the serving line to record an ace. with the score 11-9 in favor of Virginia, Wake got three straight kills from Jones, Fornah and White to take a 12-11 lead.

The teams remained close at 13-13, but three straight points from the Cavaliers prompted Wake Forest to take its first timeout of the set. the Deacs battled back immediately following the timeout and went on a 6-2 run to take a 19-18 lead late in Set 1. Salmon and Beck each had two kills apiece during the run.

Asque then stopped the run for Wake and sparked a 5-0 Virginia run that made the score 23-19 in favor of the Cavaliers. the Deacs momentarily stopped the run on a bad set by Virginia to make the score 23-20, but the Cavs scored the final two points to take the set 25-20.

Asque led the Cavs in the first set with seven kills and no errors on 13 swings, while Salmon did a nice job in the middle for Wake, leading the team in Set 1 with five kills on nine attempts.

Set 2 began favorably for the Deacs as White recorded the first kill of the set and was followed by two attack errors by Virginia. the 3-0 lead did not last for long, though, as Virginia tied the set at 4-4.

Wake Forest held onto the lead and built the advantage to as much as 14-9 after going on a 7-2 run. Hargreaves came off the bench to help the run by tallying three kills during that time.

Virginia refused to roll over and scored five straight of its own to tie the set at 14-14.

Wake Forest scored three of the next four points to take a 17-15 lead and did not allow back-to-back points by the Cavs until the lead reached 22-19. at that point, an Asque kill preceded a block by McKenzie Adams and Mallory Woolridge to make the set 22-21.

After a Wake timeout, Beck gave a two-point cushion back to the Deacs with a kill on a back slide. Virginia got another block to make the score 23-22 before a block by Jones and Salmon gave Wake set point at 24-22. the Cavaliers scored one more point before sailing a ball out of bounds to end the set at 25-23 in favor of Wake.

The Demon Deacons built a 5-2 lead early in Set 3 and never allowed the Cavaliers to go on top for the duration of the set. Virginia was able to tie the set on eight separate occasions, the last time coming at 16-16.

The Deacs went up three at 20-17 after three huge digs prolonged the rally that ended in a kill by Beck. after a Wake timeout at 22-20, Salmon took over and recorded three kills to end the set and give Wake Forest a 2-1 lead in the match.

There was not much separation between the two squads during Set 4, as Wake had three-point leads of 13-10 and 15-12. Virginia had the biggest lead of the set at 21-17, but the Deacons rallied off four points in a row to tie the set at 21-21. kills by Salmon and McIntyre and two Cav errors helped the Deacon cause.

A Virginia kill by Emily Rothman gave the Cavaliers a 22-21 lead, but another kill by Salmon and a huge block by Salmon and McIntyre gave Wake a 23-21 and forced a timeout by Virginia. out of the timeout, Salmon recorded another kill to set up match point for the Deacs.

Rothman tallied another kill to bring the Cavs within one, but Hargreaves ended the match on a swing down the line on the outside to give Wake Forest the match.

Wake’s win over Virginia snaps a five-match losing streak to the Cavaliers in Charlottesville, as the last Deacon victory in Memorial Gymnasium was on October 26, 2003.

The Demon Deacons will travel to Florida next week to play Florida State at 7 p.m. on Friday before playing Miami at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday.   spacer Salmons Offense and Thornberrys Defense Lead Wake Forest Volleyball to Four Set Win Over Virginia WAKE FOREST OFFICIAL ATHLETIC SITE

Mrs. Clean looks to clean up streets

1287900117 59 Mrs. Clean looks to clean up streetsPublished 4:50pm Monday, October 4, 2010

Kesia Martin, known to most as mrs. Clean, is known for her skill in cleaning many of the offices and buildings around town.

Now, she’s turning her attentions to cleaning the streets.

Martin has established a fund at Regions Bank and is soliciting donations that would purchase lawn and garden tools for at-risk youths.

The program, Martin said, would teach at-risk students how to use these tools and earn money by performing yard work and chores.

“We have a few people in the area who are in desperate need of help,” she said. “We’re talking about changing people’s lives.”

Martin said she already has approximately 25 people lined up for the training, about 15 of which are in Demopolis.

What she’s looking for now are literally the tools to help these people earn a living.

“Blowers, saws, swing axes, rakes and just about any yard tool,” she listed among the items she will use to train her students. “Even large garbage bags.”

Once she has secured the tools, Martin said she would work with the students to teach them how to present themselves to potential customers.

“You have to show them how to ask for the work,” she said. “It’s as easy as walking up to them and introducing yourself and telling them how you can help them in return for payment.”

Martin said teaching these students, mostly men, how to properly address the public will likely be her biggest obstacle.

“I will not tolerate cussing,” she said. “I’m going to work closely with them, find out about their personality and change some of that.”

Funds can be donated at any Regions Bank branch under the Donation Help Fund. Please footnote Kesia Martin on the memo line.

Past Tense: Electric companies started out small in Milan  Local Coverage

It’s hard to believe that an electric company built a power plant in downtown Milan, but today’s picture proves that it did happen.the photo, dated 1915, shows a power plant owned by Eastern Michigan Edison Co. although the building looks imposing in this photo, it was a very small structure. look at the parking lot across from the Baptist church, on the northeast corner of Ferman and Gay streets. that humble parking lot is large enough so that it held that brick building and the lawn area on both sides of it.look behind the power plant. that building with the windows was a planning mill at the time. the planning mill is still there on Gay Street, used as a residence, with an outdoor swing in the front yard.Notice that the power plant entrance took up a major portion of the front of the building. the front of the building wasn’t very wide. try to imagine that this little building held both the offices and the substation for an electric power company serving the Milan area, starting in about 1911.before Eastern came to town, Milan received electricity from Wiley Lamkin, who built his own electric generators from spare parts and odds and ends. he burned coal and sent out electric juice from his corporate headquarters on Wabash Street, where the American Legion is located today. his old electric plant is gone. I am sure the American Legion is a much larger building than Lamkin’s electric plant.Milan was experiencing a change from homemade electricity to something produced by a big company from out of town. Meanwhile in the Ann Arbor area, the Edison company was building electric plants along the Huron River to supply power. back in those days, very small coal-burning plants supplied electricity, with steam generators, to the individual neighborhoods.Milan was certainly an individual neighborhood, where electricity was concerned. for some reason, Eastern Michigan didn’t look to the Saline River to supply power in Milan. Instead, the company used coal, not water, as the source of power. the power was sent to Milan on high voltage lines and then distributed to customers at the 120-volt level.this is interesting because Henry Ford came to Milan and felt water power was the way to go. In 1937, he carved out a lake so he would have a huge reservoir in his mill pond and then erected a new cement dam, thinking he would have tremendous power for his ignition coil factory. As it turned out, Ford was never successful with his efforts to extract power from the Saline River. his power plant, now Milan City Hall, contained both a water generator and a coal-and-steam generator, which was supposed to be a backup. In fact, the steam generator ran the factory. the water power never amounted to much in the way of powering that coil factory, despite the imposing dam and lake-size mill pond.Eastern realized that coal was cheap and plentiful. this power substation on Ferman Street was on the edge of downtown. that would never be allowed today.Notice the grid just above the power plant. the late Warren Hale, in his "way back When" column of June 25, 2003, said was able to stand outside this building as a boy, and he could hear a humming noise from the grid. he says small "critters" went inside the fence and fried themselves.back in 2003, Hale was coming to my office every Friday afternoon. I would scan his photo of the week, using my computer, and send it to this newspaper by e-mail. he wrote about this picture, commenting that it was a Frank Pesha photo, complete with the characteristic Pesha serial number. Pesha apparently wrote on the bottom of his photo, "Electric Light Plant, Milan, Michigan," in crude handwriting.I have another version of the photo, a postcard sent to me recently by Susan Green. a former Milan resident, she gave the Milan Area Historical Society her fantastic collection of Milan post cards, including today’s illustration. She now lives in New Port Ritchey, Fla.the new postcard has the same information, but it’s printed in red letters along the top. the crude handwriting at the bottom has been blotched out. someone apparently stole Pesha’s photo and altered the negative, covering over his serial number and handwriting. Also, the new post card was "screened" for a mass printing job.Hale obviously read the minutes of Milan Village board meetings from that time period. Hale found out the residents voted not to transfer their electric service from Lamkin to the company from out of town. Milan voters were against the out-of-town company, even though it would provide electricity a lot cheaper.Later, the vote was taken again, and Eastern won a franchise. this made it possible for Eastern to build its power plant in 1911, as shown in this photo.Meanwhile, Detroit Edison was coming to power in both Detroit and Ann Arbor. It apparently bought out Eastern in 1916, using this same tiny brick building. around 1919, Detroit Edison assigned address numbers to everyone in town, making it easier to send light bills to the customers.Eventually Detroit Edison sold its power plant substation to the village of Milan for $2,000. this made a new parking lot possible.Today’s information came primarily from Hale’s column, with additional facts about the history of electric generation from Mark Hildebrandt of Ann Arbor. a related topic is "Thor Barnes of Milan, an early expert in electric power."Martha Churchill is a freelance writer and local historian. Country Charm:  The White Porch Swing

Country Charm:  The White Porch Swing

Every home owner wants to create a space where people want to gather, and where they feel comfortable.  this is the type of place where memories are made and people enjoy the company of friends and family, or even a peaceful afternoon alone.  the perfect place to create this type of environment is on your front porch!

A porch swing is an item of furniture that instantly adds an element of fun and relaxation to the front of your home.  It’s hard to see a one and not want to swing on it a bit.  it tells the neighbors that you are open and brings more of a sense of community.  it is perfect for relaxing after a hard day’s work, or for reading to your kids or sipping lemonade on a hot summer’s evening.

There are a huge variety of swings to choose from.  You have the simple, but elegant wicker swings, often made from resin for added durability and weatherproofing.  There are swings made from various woods, which might add a more rustic or outdoorsy feel, and there are those made of metal that are charming and add a memory of times gone by.

Whichever material you choose to have your porch swing made of, you can usually choose the color you’d like it to be, as well.  some opt for the natural wood, metal or wicker hues, while many prefer a green or white tone.

A white porch swing adds a little country charm to your house.  whether you chose white wicker, white resin or wood or metal painted white, this color instantly adds a fresh, clean appearance to your porch.

One great thing about a white porch swing is that it is easy to match it to other items of furniture.  Opting for a natural wood hue means that you will struggle to find other items of furniture that are just the same tone, unless you buy them as a set.  if you pick a metal finished swing, you will have to consider having any other item of furniture be metal, too.

White is an easy color to match, not just to other items of furniture, but to paint and fabrics.  it is, obviously, the most neutral color, so you can change your porch, or the cushions as often as you like, and still have it all look great with your white porch swing.

For a clean, crisp, nice, and yet casual look, a white porch swing is the perfect way to go.  You can spend hours of time enjoying the great outdoors, getting to know your neighbors, reading, talking or enjoying the sunset with your loved ones.  Not only is it a beautiful addition to your home, it’s a beautiful addition to your life.

WOOD ARBORS

1285999325 73 WOOD ARBORS

Just as wooden garden sheds, gazebos, and pergolas are making a comeback so are arbors and arches for your yard. Arbors are being used to lead to patios, sitting areas, garden sheds, gardens, play areas etc. This is because arbors set up a natural entrance to an area you want to take your visitors. some arbors are also being used for private seating in secluded spots around the yard. You can have an arbor with fixed seating or an arbor with a swing.

BUILD YOUR OWN WOODEN ARBOR – it is really easy to build an arbor if you have a good set of plans. if you are like me you first hesitate about building your own arbor because you do not know how to make the curved cuts for an arched arbor. There is a simple solution to this and that is proven arbor plans which will show you how to make all of the cuts necessary. Another solution to this problem is to simply make a pergola style arbor where the sides are vertical and the top of the arbor is a flat top. This way there are no curves or angles to cut. Everything in a pergola style arbor is square cut.

PURCHASE ARBORS IN KIT FORM – There are many manufacturers today that make arbors and arches in kit form for ease of the homeowners. Arbor kits can be installed quickly and easily by the homeowner. They now even make no-dig kits to allow you to install an arbor without having to dig any holes in your yard. Talk about making life easy.

STYLES OF ARBORS – When we think about arbors we normally think about arched or curved arbors. I know I did and that stopped me at first because I knew I could not figure out the curved cuts. But when you look around today there are a lot of pergola style arbors and once vines are grown over the tops you will forget what kind of top the arbor has. Arbors also come with gates, benches, side fence walls, and are free standing or attached to other structures.

MATERIALS FOR ARBORS – Arbors are now made out of metal, vinyl, and wood. Metal arbors and vinyl arbors come in a variety of colors. Metal arbors come in black, white and green. Wooden arbors are made out of teak, cedar, or redwood. these woods are used to make arbors to prevent rot and decay.

REASONS FOR INSTALLING AN ARBOR – the best use of an arbor is to direct foot traffic to an area of your yard in the way you want your visitors to approach a certain area. By providing the pathway you want people to follow you prevent foot paths from being worn in the yard. You build your path, install an arbor, landscape around the arbor and direct the traffic the way you want it to go. Arbors also frame the view you want visitors to have of highlighted special areas in your yard. They add beauty and with seating they also provide functionality to the structure. Arbors also give you many landscaping options for vertical plantings such as ivys, vines, and roses. Arbors provide for a vertical change of pace in the normally flat world of our yards.

For more free information on arbors of all types and to see pictures of arbors go to wooden-garden-sheds.info where you can also purchase an arbor or get plans to build an arbor.
