1298790088 22 Vacaville bench a lasting tribute to her beauIf love is a journey, then Vacaville couple Norma Meador and Dale Garrett are enjoying the ride of their lives.

For those still moments, the 76-year-old Meador gifted her 77-year-old beau a lasting tribute — a park bench where they can take respite in each other.

“It was just a whimsy,” she said, smiling at the memory. “It is about love, and that’s what he is to me. He is love.”

Located near a side entrance to Alamo Creek Park off Alamo Drive, the shiny, city-approved-and-installed green bench that comfortably seats two is moored in one of the couple’s favorite spots. It’s shaded by trees and somewhat private, but close enough to the trail the two love to walk.

The location is also very near to their homes, which are just blocks away.

“We walk down the street holding hands,” said Meador, a retired Solano County district attorney’s investigator. “I notice more and more people holding hands. It’s delightful.”

As much as the pair love to walk, they actually met in a place known for quiet, and usually stationary, reflection.

“We’ve gone to the same church for a long, long time,” said Garrett, who retired from General Mills after more than 30 years of service.

One day last June, the pair were talking about golf, of all things, at Community Presbyterian Church. He offered to help her get back into the swing of things and she accepted.

They’ve been inseparable ever since.

“He’s an excellent golfer. I’m still a beginner,” she joked.

Both love to be active, frequently meeting to take long walks in the park, sample the abundance of wine country, perhaps go for a hike or two. There’s also trips to the movies, the symphony, and, of course, church.

“He’s very spiritual, too, and that is remarkable,” Meador said with pride.

“We just seem to get along so well together,” injected Garrett, gazing affectionately at his sweetheart on a recent day while ruffling the ears of her pup, 3-year-old G.G. “It’s just very enjoyable being with her and doing things with her, sharing our love. She’s an excellent cook, too.”

Both said they cherish their new love, which grows steadily with each passing day.

It apparently is a devotion that surpasses anything that came before, and likely will not come again.

The bench, Meador said, is symbolic of their celebration.

Which is why she had a plaque engraved with the famous passage of “1 Corinthians 13:4-7, 13 LOVE IS” affixed to the seat’s back, anchoring its heart.

“The bench will be here forever,” she emphasized. “I would anticipate our love will be, too.”

Review by francis p for All things Cedar PS50U Pergola SwingRating: This was honestly one of the best purchases I have made through Amazon as far as value. It was hard for me to commit to a purchase this size sight unseen because to ship it back would be cost prohibitive, but I took a gamble and I am so glad I did. This swing looks great under my new pergola, is sooooo comfortable to sit on without cushions of any kind, and looks far more expensive than what I paid for it. Everyone who comes over wants to sit in it and nobody can believe the cost.

1297839680 93 I have a wooden lawn swing with the curvy slats for the seat.?

Some of the slats are breaking. the swing is several years old. It's frame is old logs.

Does anyone know if I can purchase somewhere some slats that are wavy like the seat slats?

          Thanks

They steam the wood to get it to bend like that. There is no simple solution and I doubt you can buy the slats pre-formed like that exactly. you may take one off and have some made at a wood shop.

Perseus: Medusa slayer of the sky

1297234875 28 Perseus: Medusa slayer of the sky

In the celestial theater of the Shamokin night sky, there are two hero constellations. in the summer, we have Hercules the Hero that rides high in the night sky, and in the winter, there’s Perseus the Hero. Perseus is one of the constellations that sort of looks like what it’s suppose to be.

In the early evening, face the southern horizon and crank your head as high as you can and right around the overhead zenith. if your back is like mine, you can only look straight overhead for so long before varying degrees of pain start setting in. make life easier on yourself and sit back in a chair. Bring one out from the house if your lawn chairs are still put away until spring. It’s also nice because it’s easier to throw a blanket over yourself to stay extra warm.

Once you’re comfortable with eyes directed toward the zenith, look for moderately bright formation of stars that roughly resembles a one-legged stickman. That’s our hero Perseus. this formation of stars may also remind you a bit of the scrawny Christmas tree that Charlie Brown brought to his buddies in the classic Christmas special.

According to Greek mythology Perseus – the son of Zeus, the Kings of the gods of Mount Olympus – was sent on a mission to rid the land of Medusa, an incredibly ugly lady monster. how ugly was she? As a friend of mine once told me, she fell out of the ugly tree and hit every stick on the way down! Medusa had a bad hair day everyday because instead of strands of hair emerging from her head, she had dozens of really aggravated snakes. Medusa didn’t have to rip you limb from limb to hurt you. she was so ugly that all she had to do is have you glance her way and you immediately turned to stone, becoming an instant statue. she was an early version of a weapon of mass destruction because as she roamed the countryside, she could turn the whole population of a village to stone with just one look.

Something had to be done, so Zeus assigned one of his sons, Perseus, the task of hunting down Medusa, cut off her snake littered head and return it for deposit in a local hazardous waste dump. Perseus was well-armed and prepared. Along with a razor-edged sword, he borrowed the winged shoes of Hermes, the messenger of the gods, (his Roman name Mercury) so he could fly to his target. Perseus was also equipped with the magic shield of Athena, the goddess of wisdom, so he wouldn’t have to look directly at snake-headed Medusa. I’m now sure how Athena’s shield worked. I couldn’t find any schematics when I googled it, but somehow it did the job.

Armed with all his magic tools, Perseus flew up in pursuit of Medusa and before too long, tracked her down, stoning one of the many early subdivisions of early Athens. Trusting Athena’s shield to precisely navigate to Medusa’s neck, he drew his sword, and with one swing, lopped off the monster’s despicably ugly cranium. again using Athena’s magic shield and super heavy duty rubber gloves, he scooped up the head, avoiding snake bite and tossed it into an industrial strength Hefty bag for the flight home. On his way back from his successful mission, he rescued Princess Andromeda from a hungry sea monster, but that’s a story for another day.

As you see in the diagram, the moderately bright star Algol, the second-brightest star in Perseus, marks the head of Medusa. Algol is referred to as the "Demon Star" for that reason, but it’s also called that because every 2.8 days it fades by factor of 30 percent. Algol is an eclipsing binary star. that is, it’s actually two stars revolving around each other in a very tight orbit, one a little brighter than the other. When the dimmer star passes in front of the brighter star every 2.8 days, Algol fades in brightness for a few hours. maybe that’s a warning not to look at that demon star for too long or you could get stoned!

An absolute must see in the constellation Perseus is the great Perseus Double Cluster, just above the hero’s head and not all that far away from neighboring Cassiopeia. if you’re lucky enough to be stargazing in the countryside, you can see it with the naked eye as a misty patch among the stars. if you have to put up with a little light pollution, it’s still a wonderful target with a pair of binoculars or a small telescope. I know you’ll love it! It’s a pair of huge open star clusters made up of about 100 young stars each that were born anywhere from three to six million years ago. believe it or not, that makes them stellar children. our own star, the sun, is in middle age at nearly six billion years old. both clusters are really out there at a distance of 7,000 light years away with just one light year equaling about six trillion miles. Because they’re 7,000 light years away, the light that we see from them now left those clusters right around 5000 B.C.

There’s another bright cluster of stars nearby in the constellation Taurus the Bull that I know you’ve seen. It’s the Pleiades, otherwise known as the Seven Little Sisters. It kind of resembles a tiny Big Dipper. the Pleiades are so much brighter than the Perseus Double Cluster because they’re a lot closer at a distance of just over 400 light years. if you could magically reel in the Perseus Double Cluster from 7,000 light years to the distance of Pleiades, about a quarter of our night sky would be dominated by the twin Perseus clusters. It would really be something to see!

Speaking of really something to see, the first quarter moon will be hunched right next the Pleiades in a wonderful celestial hug on Friday night. Don’t miss it. Stay away, clouds.

(Lynch is an amateur astronomer and professional broadcast meteorologist and is author of the book, "Pennsylvania Starwatch.")

DALLAS — Win or lose, you expect that quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, wide receiver Hines Ward or safety Troy Polamalu figures into what happens with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

but they won’t be alone, and that’s not exactly a news flash. what follows are five under-the-radar guys who could factor in the outcome, and let the roll call begin:

Antonio Brown, WR: I admit, he’s not off the radar because he made the two biggest catches of Pittsburgh’s past two games. but Brown is not a household word, either. Nor is he one of the team’s top five receivers. In fact, his 16 catches this season put him eighth on the Pittsburgh hit list. but look where he is in the playoffs: His four catches put him one behind runners-up Ward and Emmanuel Sanders. if there’s a big play to be made, look for Brown. the Ravens didn’t, one reason they’re home Sunday.

Shaun Suisham, PK: Almost everyone sees this game as close, maybe decided on the last possession. well, close games often come down to last-minute field goals, and that’s where Suisham can play a significant role. I’ll be honest: I don’t trust the guy. I saw him blow chip-shot field goals against New Orleans and Dallas last season, then miss two more long ones in a playoff loss to Minnesota. Then again, he’s 14 of 15 with the Steelers, including 8 of 9 from 40-49 yards, and you have to like that in a tight game.

Anthony Madison, CB: He’s not the first guy off the bench, but Madison will be the second … and with Green Bay forced to throw the ball — as we know the Packers will be — he could play a significant role. There’s not a whole lot to like about the guy as a cornerback, but he was so effective on special teams he led the team in tackles. if he’s on the field, look for the Packers to look for him — and maybe, just maybe, he has his chance to make a big play.

Isaac Redman, RB: He’s known as “Red Zone Redman” around Pittsburgh for a reason: That’s where he’s the most effective. It was Redman whose 9-yard catch with 2:51 left beat Baltimore in December, basically clinching the Steelers the AFC North, and it is Redman who is averaging a team-high 6.2 yards a carry during the playoffs. OK, so he has only five carries. nevertheless, keep him in mind when the Steelers are inside the 10.

Doug Legursky, C: Granted, he’s a starter. but how many people heard of him before the AFC Championship Game? Legursky started four games this season at right guard and played all but one series at center two weeks ago against the Jets. so he knows what he’s doing. Plus, Pittsburgh ran for 166 yards against in the conference championship game — over twice as many as New York. only one problem: the Jets missed a raft of tackles. Green Bay won’t. Plus, Legursky has B. J. Raji leaning on him for four quarters. Good luck.
